Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi (06.06.1890-05.08.1950) was a pragmatic politician who played a very important role in ensuring the integration of Assam as a full-fledged state with the Union of India.
It was the Muslim League’s longtime dream to add Assam to the East Bengal map. Even Nehru was ready to sacrifice Assam. He was confronted by Gopinath Bordoloi, who demonstrated his nationalistic pride, pride, wisdom, and perseverance to ensure that Assam stayed with India.
Almost half a century after his demise in August 1950, in 1998 Bharat Ratna – the country’s highest civilian honor – was conferred posthumously upon Gopinath Bordoloi. A life-size statue of him was unveiled in the Parliament House building on October 1, 2002, by the then President of India Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam.
Today, Bharat pays a glowing tribute to this great leader on his birth anniversary.
