Chisum and his men arrive in Lincoln, driving Murphy's own cattle before them to break through the barricades. Murphy's men are defeated, with Billy personally pursuing and killing Evans. Chisum gets into a fistfight with Murphy, ending with both men falling from a balcony. Murphy is impaled on a decorative bull's horn he was using as a weapon; Nodeen, his paymaster dead, leaves town, pursued by Billy.

According to Andrew J. Fenady, the 1970 American Western movie Chisum was based on his short story "Chisum and the Lincoln County War." John Wayne played the lead role in the movie. Forrest Tucker, Christopher George, Ben Johnson, Glenn Corbett, Andrew Prine, Bruce Cabot, Patric Knowles, Richard Jaeckel, Lynda Day George, Pedro Armendariz Jr., John Agar, John Mitchum, Ray Teal, Christopher Mitchum, and Hank Worden are in the supporting cast. Geoffrey Deuel and Pamela McMyler are credited with "introducing" the actors. Both Panavision and Technicolor were used to film the movie.
