The journey of the Pegasus began in 2001 when the U.S. Air Force initiated a procurement program to replace around 100 of its oldest KC135 Stratotankers. After a series of events and competitions, the KC46 Pegasus was selected by the United States Air Force in February 2011 as the winner in the tanker competition. The first aircraft was delivered to the USAF in 2019!
The KC46 is equipped with a refueling boom driven by a fly-by-wire control system, and is capable of fuel offload rates required for large aircraft. Unlike many existing tankers, the KC46 can also receive fuel, which significantly extends the range and flexibility of global mobility and power projection maneuvers.
The plane delivers more fuel at all ranges and from shorter runways than the KC135 aircraft it’s replacing — while utilizing less ramp space than competing tankers, ensuring mission reach from forward and austere airfields..
The KC46 tanker is approved by the U.S. Air Force for global deployments, including combat operations. As of October 2023, Boeing has delivered 81 tankers to the U.S. Air Force. The aircraft has also been exported to Japan and Israel, further extending its global footprint! The Pegasus is more than just an aerial refueling aircraft.
