Two thousand years ago, a 14-year-old Arab boy became the Emperor of Rome. Marco Aurelio Antonino, better known as Elagabalus,
He was thrust into history by his ambitious Syrian mother and grandmother, who manipulated his rise to power.
His reign, lasted four years, until 220 AD.
Elagabalus rejected traditional Roman and Greek attire, often dressing in elaborate silk and gold outfits inspired by Persian styles.
He married five Roman noblewomen but had no children.
His unconventional relationships included marrying a male slave and later an athlete.
Elagabalus embraced gender representation, introducing a Senate of women and supporting prostitutes.
His attempt to establish a singular god, Elagabalus, led to unusual rituals and alienated the Roman elite.
The discontent of the military and senators culminated in a revolt, and Elagabalus met a gruesome end, decapitated and dragged through the streets of Rome.
