The village has undergone several transformations since its establishment. Initially named Farmersville in 1851, the town board decided to revert to the original name of Black Earth in 1857. This village holds the distinction of being the first incorporated village in Dane County outside of Madison in 1857, with George High serving as the first president of the village board.
Black Earth has experienced its share of trials and tribulations, most notably when the Barneveld Tornado hit in June 1984, causing considerable damage to the village and its structures.
The early history of Black Earth is marked by the presence of Native American settlements, as evidenced by remnants like the “Man Mound” effigy mound. The first European immigrants, predominantly from The British Temperance Emigration Society, settled in the valley around 1843, followed by Irish and Norwegian settlers. The village was officially platted in August of 1850, starting with six blocks and expanding over the following years.
Agriculture and related businesses have been central to Black Earth’s economy. The village saw the establishment of a grist and flour mill in 1850, a hardware and implement store in 1858, and the formation of The Patrons’ Mercantile Co-operative in 1894. This co-operative, now known as Premier Co-operative, holds the distinction of being possibly the oldest ongoing consumer co-op in the United States or even globally. Despite facing challenges such as a destructive fire in 1933, the co-operative continues to thrive.
Recreation plays a vital role in the community life of Black Earth. The village has a long-standing tradition of Home Talent baseball dating back to the 1930s and trout fishing along the Black Earth and Vermont Creeks since the 1890s. Local festivals such as Field Days have been a staple of community life, bringing together residents and celebrating the village’s rich heritage.
Black Earth, Wisconsin, is a village with deep historical roots and a strong sense of community. From its early settlers and agricultural base to its thriving co-operative and recreational traditions, this village stands as a testament to the resilience and camaraderie of its residents.
