Welp, I've officially outdone myself. This is a *12-part* performance of Forest of Cutting Shadows from the Chrono Cross OST.
This was one of the first songs to really leave an impression on me when I played the game. It never really crossed my mind to try recording it until the idea suddenly hit me last month after doing the multi-part cover of Lost Child of Time.
I'm happy I managed to pull this off, though I admit it doesn't sound nearly as faithful to the original as I'd like in terms of sounds used. Most regrettably, there's no really good analogue to the vocal patch used in the original song, and the CP4's xylophone voice has way too much "hit" sound which overpowers its actual tonal qualities (which I tried to keep in check using parametric EQ).
Here's the CP4 voices I used:
Top row:
* Marimba 2 for the two high marimba parts
* Sine Pad for the "question" / 'answer" that come in at measure 19
* Nylon Gt 1 for the guitar during the climax
Middle row:
* Xylophone for the 2 stabs that start on measure 5
* Harp for the main loop throughout the entire song (fun fact: this is just a sequence of 8th notes with echo on a dotted-eight-note interval; it ends up sounding like a 16th note sequence but isn't)
* Orbit Sine for the loop behind the harp throughout the entire song
* Slow Choir for the vocal part
Bottom row:
* Marimba 1 for the low note that hits once per measure
* NeoCrystal for the short bass accents every 2 measures
* Darklight for the long bass notes
* Vapor for the sort of low "moan" thing that comes in after the first vocal part
