Our farmers are the backbone of our island and if we want to build a sustainable future for our county with food security, we need to invest in systems of support for our local agriculture industry.
90% of our food is imported. This is not sustainable and significantly contributes to the ever-increasing expenses we all deal with. We hear this all the time. So if we know the issue, why are we not doing more to address it?
Why aren’t we aggressively pursuing more state and federal funding to support our agriculture industry and creating robust education and training pathways within our school systems and communities. Why do nonprofits continue bearing the brunt of those burdens?
Why aren’t we hosting more local farmers markets at our parks and recreation facilities? Why aren’t we subsidizing or incentivizing local produce purchases to support our farmers and bridge cost-differences for consumers to buy local?
Why aren’t we carving out considerations for subsistence farmers in policy-making? Is it in line with our values to be penalizing those trying to build and provide for community and return to bartering systems rather than profiting?
These questions are not new, they are long overdue. And the answers lie in change. In motivated leadership, with passion and dedication to pursuing the priorities of our people.
