In this segment of the JA BizTown day, citizens are comfortable doing their jobs and are excited about earning their second paychecks.
After the first set of work break rotations, a second staff meeting is announced. During this time, everyone returns to his or her assigned business and no other activity is taking place. Citizens receive their second paycheck.
They may go back to the bank to make their deposit (or their paycheck may be directly deposited), they may go shopping, or also eat lunch during this break.
The specifics of your JA BizTown simulation will be set by the local staff. Citizens will take their breaks in the same order as earlier and when not on their assigned break, they will be continuing their work by following the instructions on their job descriptions.
When on break they will shop or eat depending on local timing. Another topic that is very important to review with citizens during the second staff meeting is the spending of money they've earned.
Today ask what will happen to the retail businesses if citizens do not write checks or use their debit cards to make purchases?
Help them understand that businesses will not make a profit if people are not spending. However, also remind them they cannot spend more than they have earned.
They should be taking care to record all their transactions in their register.
It's not uncommon for a student to feel overwhelmed at some point during the JA BizTown simulation. The constant flow of incoming checks or other paperwork can be surprising to students.
You're helping them to organize the workflow goes a long way toward helping the student feel successful.
Students that handle a lot of paper will have a checklist available to help keep them organized and JA staff will provide a file folder, drawer, or another system to help assist in organization.
Encourage your students to use these tools. If you remain calm so will the students. Your example helps keep everyone engaged and on track the entire day.
As the JA BizTown day comes to a close and everyone has had a second break, all commerce in the town comes to a close.
Citizens will be given a few minutes to complete closing activities which include making final business deposits. CFOs should record all payments received so that the bank can calculate their loan or profit status. Return all equipment and supplies, hang up uniforms, hats, etc. Put extra supplies in bins or other identified locations.
Collect student checkbooks and place them in the Biz prep envelope to return to school. Gather any purchases or other personal belongings students have in the business.
A few students in select businesses will be giving speeches at the closing Town Meeting.
The volunteer checklist will let you know if a student in your business is one of them. Have him/her read the speech to you and offer assistance with any vocabulary they might struggle with.
Finally, citizens gather for the final Town Meeting and a review of their experience. Near the end of the day, it's amazing what you can hear the kids say. One of my favorites is, "wow now I can see why my mom and dad are so tired after work. It's hard being an adult"
