As speaker communities respond to conditions in their surroundings, their usage of language may change over the generations. This can lead to language endangerment. Director of the Jewish Language Project, Dr. Sarah Bunin Benor, elaborates on this issue from the point of view of Jewish languages. She explains the factors and processes which give rise to this fate, as well as the implications for developing varieties and the urgent need for language documentation.
This class was part of a 2023 joint course between JewishLive's UnYeshiva and the HUC-JIR Jewish Language Project. To learn more about Jewish languages and endangerment, visit www.jewishlanguages.org and jewishlanguages.org/stats
