Around 24,000 New York city workers will not be at work on Monday morning in the nation's biggest city. It includes those working in essential roles such as the NYPD and Fire Department along with EMT's. Over the weekend up to 26 New York firehouses were forced to close after firefighters refused to get vaccinated ahead of Mayor Bill de Blasio's Monday deadline, which is when all workers have to report having had at least one dose of the shot. The FDNY stations that closed 'due to no manpower' included six in Manhattan, nine in Brooklyn, three in Queens, four in the Bronx and four in Staten Island. By Sunday night, the number was said to be around 19, although the city denied that any were shut whatsoever. On Friday De Blasio and FDNY Commissioner Daniel Nigro warned that the effects of the closures could 'endanger the lives' of city residents. De Blasio announced in a tweet that 2,300 more workers got the shot meaning 91 percent of city workers are now vaccinated.
