The nation seems to be divided on whether the human rights of the trapped illegal miners in the North West province have indeed been violated by government.
The South African Human Rights Commission is investigating law enforcement tactics, that are being used against illegal miners, which include depriving them of food and water supplies, in a bid to force them to leave disused mines.
At a post-cabinet briefing yesterday, the Minister in the Presidency, Khumbudzo Ntshavheni, said the government would not help the illegal miners.
Her comments have sparked a furor, with some praising the government's stance whilst others have criticised it.
