2020 UI Visiting Professorship Program and the Department of Architecture, Faculty of Engineering Universitas Indonesia present:
ECOLOGICAL URBANISM TALK
According to Professor Mohsen Mostafavi one of the earliest protagonists in this field of Ecological Urbanism his essays published in 2010,
“The urban, as the site of complex relations (economic, political, social, and cultural), requires an equally complex range of perspectives and responses that can address both current conditions and future possibilities….The conjoining of ecology and urbanism can provide the knowledge, methods, and clues of what the urban can be in years to come.”
-Mostafavi, M. and G. Doherty, Eds. (2010). Ecological Urbanism. Harvard University, Graduate Design School
This lecture explores these ideas proposed through the movement of ‘Ecological Urbanism’ ten years on in the context of a Climate Emergency and a Pandemic. How might we learn from such architectural and urban design approaches to realise cities and buildings beyond the notion of the built environment as merely ‘sustainable’? How might cities and architectural practitioners actively contribute to a viable ecological future through design interventions at scale?
