Triangle Technique - The One-Handed Triangle by Latin Percussion. DH Percussionist Modern Percussion Video Blog

Latin Percussion (LP) has changed the way percussionists think about the triangle instrument. My invention -- the One-Handed Triangle, made and distributed by Latin Percussion -- brings about endless new possibilities in rhythmic expression.

Any percussion teacher will tell you that an idiophone's sound source must be struck in just the right way for maximum response. Proper triangle technique requires the briefest contact between the striker and the "bar." As I demonstrate in this percussion lesson, keeping the One-Handed Triangle perpendicular to the floor as you play it ensures that it will resonate more than it would if you play it with a rocking, tipping motion. Also, using a snapping motion to execute the strike will allow for a better sustain.

This fluid triangle technique is an example of how we percussionists best express our rhythmic colors - by making our instruments speak in their fullest voices. All of us who play auxiliary percussion can prove our worth by making our instruments "sing" like only a specialist can! All to often, well-meaning drummers and singers assume the role of percussionist - either on stage or in the studio - but their techniques typically leave much to be desired.

The Zen concept of "the sound of one hand clapping" is not nearly as interesting as "the sound of one hand playing complex triangle rhythms." That was my inspiration for this instrument invention - to elevate the triangle as a groove instrument, allowing busy triangle parts to be played with an intuitive, easy motion with a single hand. As is common in many world rhythms, bright, shimmering metal percussion can bring balance to a musical soundscape, and proper triangle technique will optimize this. The best part is that, with the One-Handed Triangle, your other hand will be free to add whatever additional instrumental part you want. And you'll never have to search for that tiny, elusive triangle beater again.
