Self-care has been co-opted to push a consumerism agenda that is rooted in overconsumption. When you search “self-care” on TikTok you see these aesthetic-obsessed videos of women hoarding skincare products and participating in beauty maintenance and branding that as self care. But we all need to stop buying useless products in the name of self-care. In this video, I discuss how we can de-commodify, de-commercialize and de-influence self care.
