If you're shopping for a brush hog (or bush hog which is actually a brand name), it's very important to match the size, to the diameter of material you want to cut with it and to the size and horsepower of your tractor. In this video we'll go through a process to help you get the right cutter for your tractor.
The first thing to look at is the size of the material you want to cut. Take a tape measure and find the biggest brush you'll be cutting and find the diameter at the base. Rotary cutters are rated for the diameter of the brush they cut, so if you're wanting to take out 2" brush, a cutter that's rated for 1" material won't last very long.
Once we've found the size of material we'll be cutting, we need to determine the width of our tractor tires. You want a cutter that's at least slightly wider than your tread width so you "cut out the tracks". If you don't cut out the tracks, there will be some material that gets run over twice before cutting and that won't work very well.
Finally, we need to determine horsepower needs of the cutters we're looking at and make sure the tractor is big enough to pull the one we buy. The specification of a brush hog will tell you the minimum horsepower the cutter requires, but that's PTO horsepower, not engine horsepower.
You may have a John Deere 2025R which is advertised at 25 horsepower, but that's engine horsepower. When you take out all of the parasitic items out of the equation that the engine powers (power steering, hydraulic pump, hydrostat, etc.), what's left is PTO horsepower. So the Deere 2025R is only 18 PTO horsepower. We don't want to purchase a cutter that requires 25 horsepower.
Get those three criteria in perfect harmony and you'll get a cutter that's perfect for your needs. Happy cutting!
