The 1925 merger of the Holt Manufacturing Company and the CL Best Gas Traction Company created the California based Caterpillar Tractor Company or rather CL Best merged with Holt or wait a second here guys.
Let's back the tractor up a little bit further.
In 1878 Daniel best who was CL Best’s father joined with a man named Porter Slate to build a steam powered machine to move Slate’s grain combine. Three years later, the after building five different machines. The men built a machine with a rubber belt on the drive wheels, making one of the first track layers.
In 1881, Daniel Best left Porter Slate and he took the ideas that they had worked on together and began manufacturing the Best Track-Type tractor.
As steam power started to fade, Benjamin Holt bought out Daniel Best’s company and the best track type tractor, and he did this in 1908.
Meanwhile, CL Best who is Daniel Best’s son was manufacturing tractors utilizing gasoline engines. As gas powered tractors became preferred over steam, the steam tractor business began to fade.
And in 1925 CL Best merged with Benjamin Holt to form the Caterpillar Tractor Company.
To begin Benjamin Holt invented a steam tractor in 1890. Prior to Holt inventing his tractor, farmers in California relied on horses to tend crops and all of agriculture in California was using horsepower.
California farmers were looking for new and better ways to take care of their land. Much like the farmers all across America. Transportation of goods and services was moving rapidly forward, and steam was playing an important role. Therefore, Holt thought that he could apply steam power to farm machinery, and he was quite correct in his thoughts.
By 1890, Holt had invented his steam tractor. Farmers now could produce their crops much faster and cheaper than they could have ever done with horsepower. Steam Powered equipment replaced horses in the farms very, very quickly.
Benjamin Holt believed in providing his customers what they want and what they needed, Therefore, Holt continue to innovate and create new machines for the agricultural market.
Of note, the wheels of his giant steam tractors that his company was producing tended to sink into the soft California soils. In 1904, Holt solved this problem by putting tracks under one of his old steam tractors. Thus, he created the first track layer.
The photographer who documented one of the first successful tests of Holt’s track laying system named the machine the “caterpillar” later that would become the worldwide brand name of Caterpillar that is famous all over the world for construction equipment and specifically track laying equipment.
In 1925, CL Best merged with Benjamin Holt to form the California based Caterpillar Tractor Company. Holt brought in his innovative skills and Best brought in his internal combustion engines, and more importantly, Best brought in money, as Best was a better businessman. Best also brought in a dealer network into this merger.
For the rest of today's video, I'm going to review the Caterpillar 385C L excavator in 1:64th scale that Diecast Masters has made.
Caterpillar construction sets the industry standard for earth moving equipment. CAT construction equipment is there for whatever job you have to do.
This is a great big excavator. It has an impressive digging force of 70,814 pounds delivered from the C18 Acert Caterpillar diesel engine and 513 horsepower. It carries a bucket size of 2.4 yards to 6.2 yards. It has a weight 185,475 pounds. It's twelve foot seven inches wide. It's 44 foot six inches long and it has a height in transport mode. 15 foot eight inches.
The Diecast Masters version features authentic CAT graphics all around. It rides on rubber tracks, but the chassis on this one is diecast.
The hoe raises and lowers just like the real one. The hoe goes out and it'll dump. It features your standard CAT exhaust on the back. CAT loves that mitered 45 degree exhaust.
This is not the most detailed model that's ever been made but this one's only $30 and it fits right in with our 64th scale construction.
The real Cat 385C L Excavator is kind of a crude looking machine anyway. It's not refined because it's meant for work not for beauty. The body on this guy is all diecast. The stick, the hoe, and bucket are of diecast construction. The cab is plastic and it has a detailed interior.
