[ Ссылка ] → Jeweler, Michael Moriarty, shows you the easiest and safest way to clean your colored gemstone jewelry at home with simple products that most people will have on hand. Not only that, but he also gives you some other options that will also help you keep your jewelry looking clean and sparkly!
1.) Dawn Dish Soap, warm water (NOT HOT!), and a soft bristle toothbrush.
This is what we recommend as the safest method for most colored gemstone jewelry. While this works on most things, keep in mind there are certain stones/treatments that even this could cause issues with.
The main one that comes to mind are Ethiopian Opals. These are hydrophane and absorb water fairly quickly, which will cause them to go clear when saturated with water, then start to look cloudy or milky when they start to dry out. Usually this isn't a problem with just water, but it is best to keep these particular opals away from liquids, especially anything oily.
Typically, these gems will be fine using this method: Tanzanite, Tourmaline, Garnet, Zircon, Sapphire, Ruby, Diamond, aquamarine, morganite, heliodor, amethyst, citrine, peridot, spinel, sunstone, and topaz to name a few. If you're curious about a gem not listed here, please ask in the comments and I'll let you know!
2.) The GemOro Ultrasonic Cleaner
Product shown in video: [ Ссылка ]
This machine does work wonders, especially when you need to get your jewelry cleaned in hard to reach places that a toothbrush just wont get to. Things like the small accent diamonds that flank a pendant or ring. This will help get those tricky spots cleaned after running it for a couple cycles. Pairing this with the toothbrush will get your jewelry looking great in no time.
That being said, this machine should be used with caution and not all colored gemstones should be put in an ultrasonic cleaner. IT CAN DAMAGE SOME STONES! Make sure you do some research on what is and is not safe and be sure to follow the manufacturers suggested uses. Here is a good article to help guide you on what is and is not okay for the ultrasonic cleaner: [ Ссылка ] If you have any questions about ultrasonic cleaning, please feel free to ask in the comment section!
3.) Polishing cloth to brighten up your chains or precious metal jewelry. We use a Fabulustre polishing cloth and you can get one here: [ Ссылка ]
Make sure to follow the manufacturers suggested uses and just keep in mind, that there is red rouge on it, which can make your hands or anything else it touches red.
4.) Silver cleaning solution: We use the Hagerty silver cleaning solution which is available here: [ Ссылка ]
Make sure that you follow the manufactures suggested use. We would suggest that you only keep your silver in it for a very short period of time. 10-20 seconds at most. It may not be safe on all colored gemstones, so be cautious on what you put in there. Another thing to note: If you're using the silver cleaning liquid and then putting it in the ultrasonic cleaner, make sure you rinse off the silver cleaner very thoroughly before putting it in the ultrasonic cleaning solution. If you do not, it may contaminate the ultrasonic cleaning solution and cause any other gold or silver jewelry that you have in the cleaner to tarnish or react negatively.
5.) Taking your colored gemstone jewelry to a jeweler to have professionally cleaned: Most seasoned jewelers should know how to treat colored gemstones, but not all do. I have heard stories and have had jewelry stores reaching out to us for replacement stones because their jeweler accidentally steamed a colored gemstone, put a certain stone in the ultrasonic that shouldn't have, or put it in a very very hot cleaner, which caused it to fracture. It's not often that it happens, but it can. Just make sure to remind them that you don't want your colored gemstones steamed and to be cautious in an ultrasonic cleaner, especially if its a fairly large gem.
That all said, there is such a wide variety of gemstones with varying qualities and sizes, plus endless jewelry styles, which makes it very hard to be definite on what cleaning method is best without seeing your particular piece. If you have any doubts, make sure you stop by your jeweler to find out what cleaning method is best for you.
