I hope you will enjoy this 5-minute-fix video in which I will be checking the tappets. There will be more videos to follow in this little mini series.
Please do let me know if you see that I missed any or have any comments about this routine!
Please note that this is how I approach some of these maintenance jobs, so please remember to consult your owners manuals.
Checking Valve Adjustment:
1) Remove spark plugs to assist in turning the engine over
2) Remove the rocker cover caps using K1 spanner for 3 reasons:
Note that some caps may catch on the tappet adjusters, turn engine over
3) For each cylinder, with both valves completely closed and the piston at TDC (Top Dead Center), check the tappets
i. Try to move the rocker arm up and down to produce a tapping sound
ii. Check to see how freely the pushrod spins in your fingertips.
4) Adjust the valves so that the pushrod will spin but not super-freely. Just so it can turn with your fingertips
5) Turn the engine over several times to test tappets again and that the pushrods are not too tight (can damage)
6) Re-fit caps
