Live: Zahir Jaffer sentenced to death for Noor Mukadam murder
Zahir Jaffer, other co-accused inside courtroom
An Islamabad sessions court had announced the final verdict in the Noor Mukadam case sentencing Zahir Jaffer, the prime suspect, to death and acquitting his mother Asmat Adamji.
The verdict was reserved on Tuesday, February 22, after the prosecution and defence lawyers completed their arguments. Additional Sessions Judge Ata Rabbani heard the case that spanned over four months.
Noor Mukadam, 27, was killed on July 20 at the residence of Zahir Jaffer in Islamabad’s F-7/4 sector. The four-month long murder trial began in October. Zahir, his parents, and servants are among the 12 accused.
The hearing
The Islamabad police have brought Zahir Jaffer, prime suspect in the case, to court.
Other people named in the case, Zahir’s father, his house workers, Therapy Works CEO and employees, have reached the court premises as well.
After marking attendance of employees of Therapy Works, the court ordered the courtroom be emptied. The judge said he needed to speak to the defendants. The defence team, including Zahir, was later sent back after the judge was done.
Hoping justice will prevail
In an interview with SAMAA TV earlier in the day, Shaukat Mukadam, Noor’s father, said he has high hope justice will prevail.
“God willing, the murderer and other people named in the case will be punished,” he said. “We hope the final decision will be based on truth.”
The case
The Noor Mukadam case hit national headline for its extraordinarily graphic detail. The young woman was found dead in Zahir Jaffer’s house located in Islamabad’s Sector F-7/4 on July 20. It was prominent not just because it emerged that the victim was beheaded and mutilated but also because Noor’s father Shaukat Mukadam is a former diplomat and it happened in an upscale neighbourhood.
