6. SOUNDBITE (English) David Goldthorpe, head of books, Sotheby's auction house:
"There's only one of it. It is the rarest and most famous stamp in existence. It was printed in 1856 in British Guiana, now Guyana. It was printed at the local newspaper office because of a failure of the British authorities to deliver enough stamps to British Guiana. So, it was made and slightly rushed in provisional circumstances."

10. SOUNDBITE (English) David Goldthorpe, head of books, Sotheby's auction house:
"It was discovered by a schoolboy stamp collector, he was Scottish, but he was resident in British Guiana. He found it among his uncle's papers, and he recognised obviously as a stamp, and as a fairly unusual one, but he didn't really take to it, so he swapped it with another local collector for, I think, a group of other foreign stamps. And its rarity was gradually appreciated, so that every time it changed hands into other great stamp collections, it fetched more and more money. It's the only major world stamp that's not present in the royal stamp collection."

11. SOUNDBITE (English) David Goldthorpe, head of books, Sotheby's auction house:
"The design of this stamp is pretty basic because it was printed under such rushed circumstances, and I think that adds to its appeal. Stamp collecting, it is quite democratic, I mean, anyone can be a stamp collector and the quality, well, schoolboys can collect stamps, and this is the top of the tree. So, it's at the top of the stamp collecting pyramid. And all the stories that go with it and the great collections it's been in and the ardour of the collectors who try to acquire it, all builds up to making this small piece of paper so very valuable."

15. SOUNDBITE (English) David Goldthorpe, head of books, Sotheby's auction house:
"I think stamps are the ultimate collectible, they're small, you can carry them around easily. They're often, as you mentioned, have interesting designs upon them. They speak of history, not just postal history, but through their designs, history of nations. So, they encapsulate so much in so little, that's why they're attractive."
