(30 Aug 2019) East Timor celebrated its 20th anniversary of independence from Indonesia on Friday with a party in the capital Dili.
Thousands of East Timorese poured out in to an open field for a festival of traditional dance, live music and fireworks.
Banners and flags adorned the capital to welcome visiting dignitaries including the Australian Prime Minister, Scott Morrison, who was invited by East Timor's president Francisco Guterres.
Morrison's visit to East Timor is the first by an Australian prime minister in 12 years.
Earlier on Friday, Morrison and Guterres exchanged diplomatic notes to activate a new maritime boundary and a deal to share oil and gas revenue from the Timor Sea.
Australia led the United Nations military force that brought peace to East Timor in the bloody aftermath of an independence ballot in 1999.
