Regensburg (from Latin Castra Regina; also Ratisbona and Ratispona) is located in eastern Bavaria and is the capital of the Regierungsbezirk Oberpfalz with the seat of the government of the Upper Palatinate. It is an independent city and the seat of the district administrator of the district of the same name. It is one of Bavaria's three regional centres. Regensburg has 157,443 inhabitants , making it the fourth largest city in Bavaria after Munich, Nuremberg and Augsburg.

The city is the episcopal seat of the diocese of Regensburg, which was established in 739. The city has Roman roots, from about 175 the legionary camp Castra Regina was built here. It became an imperial city in the Middle Ages and was the seat of the Perpetual Diet of the Holy Roman Empire until 1806.
