Dr. Ryan White is an Emergency Physician at Johnson Memorial Health.
In this video, Dr. White discusses the signs and symptoms of stroke.
“Here’s a fact: Stroke does not discriminate,” Dr. White says. “Everyone is at risk regardless of age, race or overall health.”
The symptoms of a stroke can be sudden and scary, Dr. White says, but being able to recognize them could save your life.
Dr. White explains the FAST acronym for stroke response, that is:
F is for face: Does one side of your face droop when you smile?
A is for arms: Can you raise both arms equally, or does on arm drift down?
S is for speech: Is your speech clear, or is it garbled or slurred?
And T is for time: Time is very important. Call 9-1-1 as soon as possible.
“Just like heart attacks, we have medications and procedures that can eliminate or minimize your risk of disability or even death,” Dr. White says. “All of these signs and symptoms of stroke require immediate attention, and knowing them could very well save your life.”
In 2015, Dr. Ryan White was named the Johnson Memorial Health Physician of the Year. The hospital annually recognizes one doctor who has been nominated by their peers and the staff for the award. Dr. White has served as an emergency department physician since 2011.
Dr. White grew up in Connersville, Indiana, and competed his two undergraduate degrees at Purdue and IUPUI before simultaneously earning his MS and MD at the American University of the Caribbean. He completed his Residency in Family Medicine at St. Francis Hospital and Health Services (now Franciscan St. Francis Health) in Indianapolis.
