My reaction to the book review by DPA with the author of "Policing Patients: Treatment and Surveillance on the Frontlines of the Opioid Crisis" Liz Chiarello. Great interview. The gap in knowledge about the legal differences between a SUD patient and a pain patient is why pain patients are so vulnerable to abuse and abandonment today, as the very language used restricts the care available due to the CARA law. The language of OUD/SUD in the context of a pain patient forces severe restriction of care modalities for chronic as well as surgical pain that goes beyond the real moral harm done to pain patients when so consistently compared to criminal drug addiction & use.
