'I just want her out of Ukraine, can you come and get her'
22-year old Wyatt Raitt of Ancaster says those were the words from his college friend Alek who is from Ukraine, asking him to find his younger sister Arilla, who is trying to escape the war zone in their country.
Raitt says that was the last conversation they had two weeks ago when the pair were trying to flee the bombs in Kyiv. Without knowing what Arilla looks like or how to speak Ukrainian, Raitt made his way to eastern Poland anyways where he camps, hoping she appears. Alek is safe because he can't leave the country.
Raitt says he's helping out with refugee efforts in the area and with people who are fleeing from death and destruction across Ukraine.
Yesterday in besieged Mariupol, Ukrainian officials say a theatre with the word "children" spelled out in Russian on it, was bombed with hundred's sheltering in the basement.
They say rescue workers continue to search for casualties, but there are reports of survivors, while dozens have been killed in the city over the past day and more than 350 thousand people are trapped.
