Several elected officials visited the Rikers Island jail complex in New York City. The lawmakers said the intake center operation has gotten better but inmates are still not being processed fast enough through the court system. Only 40% of inmates have been vaccinated, according to Council Member Mark Levine. The number of vaccinated correction officers is rising. COBA, the correction officers union, said more than 1,800 officers have contracted COVID-19 and that another 1,200 were injured by inmates in the last year.
