Turkey is in the process of testing the newly acquired S 400 air defense system which it received from Russia.
A Turkish defense official had said earlier that military aircraft will be used in the capital Ankara on Nov 25 & 26 during the testing of the S-400 system’s radar-detection equipment.
The Turkish official who talked about the radar tests was elaborating on the Ankara governor’s statement on Sunday that said low- and high-altitude flights by Turkish F-16 warplanes around the capital should be expected on those dates.
As of now, it is apparent that the tests have taken place.
Turkish media broadcasts showed US-made F-16 fighter jets flying over Ankara on Monday to test what appeared to be functioning Russian-made radars that are part of S-400.
So, technically F 16s have been used as dummy targets.
This move will certainly irk Washington which has already stopped delivers of F 35 to the country.
Another report indicates that Turkey may buy more S 400 batteries going forward.
Producer of S 400 Rosoboronexport's Alexander Mikheev told RIA news agency Moscow and Ankara were actively discussing Ankara taking up an option in the original contract for it to receive more S-400 systems, with talks focused on financial questions.
RIA cited Mikheev as saying.
"We hope that in the first half of 2020 we will sign the contract documents,"
In this video Defense Updates reports on Turkey using American made F 16s to test S 400 and its plan to acquire more of them.
Let’s get started.
