Foreign languages is one of the subjects taught in schools that have a less obvious purpose. How many times in our lives will we be in a situation where we need to know a foreign language? Being able to speak in the local language does allow us to communicate with the native speakers and build intimate connections. However, that is not the only merit of language learning. Learning languages help us find the rich history and culture hidden in the fabric of the languages themselves and to understand our way of thinking that makes us communicate in the way we do. In this talk, Daniel shares about what he enjoys about learning languages and how that allows him to better understand himself in the context of this world.
Daniel is a member of Deerfield Academy’s class of 2021. He was born in Seoul, South Korea and moved to the US for high school. His interests are broad, ranging from math to Classics. He speaks Korean and English, has studied Mandarin, Latin, and Greek in school, and enjoys learning other languages in his free time. In college next year, he hopes to follow the lead of curiosity, studying math, languages, and other passions he may stumble upon. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at [ Ссылка ]
