Rare and gorgeous 5.00 CTS natural black opal cabochon originating from Ethiopia. This measures approximately 16.9 x 10.4 x 6.7 mm and is cut into a pear shape.
This gem has a rare honeycomb pattern, which is considered desirable and highly sought by collectors. Our supplier estimates that less then 1 in 100 have this pattern. While not a scientific estimate, it is clear that they are not common.
The stone itself has a strong play of color with almost electric looking flashes of green, red, orange, and gold. Some blue and purple coloring can also be seen on different angles.
This is a naturally earth mined gemstone and has been smoke treated to enhance color. Don't be fooled by lesser imitations. this is not a doublet or filled product, this is solid earth mined stone.

Ethiopian opals provide an excellent value for consumers as they are considered the most durable type of opal, and are not susceptible to crazing and drying out like other forms of opal. They are also better priced than their Australian counterparts.
Ethiopian opals have an interesting history. Archaeologists say they have been mined there for about 6000 years, and the first source of opals in the world. Interestingly they were forgotten about for thousands of years and rediscovered in the 1990s.
To best care for opals, one must avoid them being submerged in water for extended periods of time, and avoid harsh chemicals or dramatic changes in temperature. With a little care, opals can last a lifetime.
