Wisdom teeth extractions are something that are very common. I hear about it all the time. People are asking me questions about it all the time. We talk about it all the time. We look at our X rays and we always evaluate you to see if you can hold those wisdom teeth or not.
Why you take wisdom teeth out is because you may not have space and impacted wisdom teeth. That's a big word, impaction. What does that mean? It means the tooth is stuck in the bone and the soft tissue or just the soft tissue and it's stuck there and that's an impacted one. Oftentimes those need to be surgically removed and that can be done here in our office. We may send you to an oral surgeon to have those done where you can be put to sleep and wake up later after the teeth are taken out.
Wisdom teeth are one of those things that we wonder why we even have them. And some people, they have enough space and they have them and they grow in and they're fine. Other people, they grow halfway in. That's the worst scenario. Because if they're halfway in, the gums around them will get debris packed in there and then the tooth can become infected. And then it's an emergency situation, taking it out.
When you come in to have your teeth clean, we always evaluate you or your child for their wisdom teeth. and if they can stay or if they need to go. And we will tell you if we can do them here in our office. Or we're going to send you to an oral surgeon to have them taken out under anesthesia. That's a great question.
