Cortney Smith, CEO of AsianProSource addresses this question. China's development and their capabilities both the apparel, cutting-edge electronics and world-class moulding in its plastics, makes China as easy choice for certain industries. In the end, the company must do a scaled down version of cost being built in USA, built in another 3rd party country or in China and do comparisons and see the competitive advantage of going to China are.
What we find China is good for is that there is a multi-technology product and if you have plastics and electronics and packaging, all to be done in one place, China might be a good solution if they got the best materials and prices and all these things in combination.
Another key consideration in looking to see if your products should be done in China or not is your timing. You might look at a local US based manufacture in a small run capacity that makes more sense for a short term or a quick turnaround time to have it done in the States. Usually, China is considered when there's enough lead time and product development time, that would make sense and would allow for things to be built in a foreign country then shipped it over to here, pass it to customs and coming to client.
If you want a quick fix, there's also air freight as an option coming from overseas. But oftentimes, you would look into your timelines for consideration of what countries is best to go to when you source out.
