Born in 1944 here in Richfield, Will Steger is a prominent spokesperson for the understanding and preservation of the Arctic. He has traveled tens of thousands of miles by kayak and dogsled over 50 years, leading teams on some of the most significant polar expeditions in history.
Most recently, Steger established the Steger Wilderness Center in Ely, MN, to preserve expedition archives. His Climate Generation: A Will Steger Legacy is a non-profit that engages leaders to foster climate literacy and action for a more equitable and sustainable future for all.
Steger holds a Bachelor of Science in geology, Masters in education, and Honorary Doctorates from several universities including the University of St. Thomas. His writings and photos are widely known and appreciated globally. He has authored four books: Over the Top of the World, Crossing Antarctica, North to the Pole, and Saving the Earth.
