This video addresses the string playing composition technique "col legno" in both of its forms, col legno battuto and tratto. This unique is usable for violin, viola, cello, and double bass. It involves using the wooden part of the bow as opposed to the string part of the bow. We also run through examples from Anton Webern and Gustav Mahler to show the techniques use in context.
