Infibulation refers to the removal of the clitoris, partial or total removal of the labia minora and the stitching together of the labia majora 1.
The seal is in formed by cutting and repositioning the inner, or outer, labia with or without removal of the clitoris. Excision of part or all of the external genitalia and stitching or narrowing of the Vaginal opening. The procedure leaves a wall of skin and flesh across the vagina and of the pubic area. by inserting a twig or similar object before the wound heals, a small hole is created for the passage of urine and menstrual blood. the legs are bound together for two or four weeks to allow healing.
in the cultural aspect , Infibulation is Known as pharaonic circumcision. It is practised mainly in northeastern africa, particularly in Djibouti, eritea, ethopia, Somalia and sudan.
Infibulation is strongly linked to virginty and chastity, and used to safeguard girls from sex outside marriage and from having sexual feelings. in some cultures it is considered necessary at marriage for the husband to see her vagina closed and, in some instances, both the mothers will take the girl to be cut open enough to be able to have sex.
