I often get asked "what should be the first fly pattern I learn to tie?". My answer is usually The Woolly Bugger and here's why. If a beginner takes an interest in fly tying, you want to encourage it, and with this pattern being so effective, you increase their chances of helping them land their first fish with their first hand tied fly.
