"John Demjanjuk was accused of involvement in the murder of Jews in the extermination camps of Treblinka and Sobibor. In Sobibor a quarter of a (m) million Jews. Demjanjuk arrives today (Tuesday) in Germany after being extradited by the American authorities and we hope that the trial will be concluded and that justice will be served even if delayed. We see great importance in this trial anyway and certainly for future generations, there is a moral worth and educational value in bringing Nazi criminals to justice."

8. SOUNDBITE: (English) Yitzhak Arad, expert witness at Demjanjuk's Israel trial:
"In spite (of) his old age, the trial should be carried out because such terrible crimes which were carried out, there's no limit of time for them so I think they had to put a trial and I'm sure that the German judicial system will find the proper way to find him guilty or any kind of sentence they will issue."

11. SOUNDBITE: (English) Yoram Sheftel, Demjanjuk's former lawyer:
"The Israeli supreme court ruled in September 1993 that there is no basis to prosecute Demjanjuk on any alternative charge as well. And I emphasise again, (there has been) no change whatsoever in the evidence. I have no explanation whatsoever how come Demjanjuk finds himself now - 33 years after the misconduct, the fraud upon the court, started by the (Israeli) justice department - finds himself in Germany facing accusations which are baseless and has no foundation whatsoever."

STORYLINE
Israeli Holocaust experts on Tuesday welcomed the deportation of John Demjanjuk from the US to Germany to face allegations of being an accessory to the murder of 29-thousand Jews and others as a guard at the Sobibor death camp in Nazi-occupied Poland.
The 89-year-old Demjanjuk arrived in Munich on Tuesday morning and was formally placed into investigative custody in Munich's Stadelheim prison.
The head of Israel's Yad Vashem Holocaust Memorial archives Haim Gertner said he hoped that "justice will be served".
Yitzhak Arad, an expert witness at Demjanjuk's Israel trial in the 1980s, said Demjanjuk must be tried for the crimes he's accused of despite his age.
A spokesman for Munich prosecutors said they had called for an expert opinion on whether Demjanjuk is fit to stand trial.
He said it could take up to two weeks to make that determination, because a doctor would have to examine Demjanjuk and also observe him over time.
If Demjanjuk is found fit to stand trial, it would be the culmination of a legal saga that began in 1977 and has involved courts and government officials from at least five countries on three continents.
Demanjuk was deported by the US to Israel in 1986 after accusations surfaced that he was the notorious "Ivan the Terrible" at the Treblinka death camp in Poland.
