Scientists say these bones are from two new species of penguin. Well, actually two old, extinct species of penguin.

South American paleontologists say new fossils found in Peru lead them to believe that penguins once roamed that part of South America much earlier than they used to think.
Penguins live on a lot of islands in the Southern Hemisphere -- some even near the equator.

But scientists used to think they hadn't reached warm climates until about 10 million years ago. The 40 million year old remains tell a whole different story.

The fossils include two types of penguins.

One of them was five feet tall and had a long, sharp beak. That's larger than any penguins known today and the third largest ever. This paleontologist describes the beak as spear-like.
The other is about the same size as the modern King Penguin. Researchers say it represents an early part of penguin evolutionary history.
