(14 Sep 2016) Farmers gave away their produce in central Buenos Aires on Wednesday to protest their economic plight.
Hundreds of people pushed and shoved as the farmers representing the Land Workers Union distributed crates of lettuce, spinach and other vegetables in the Plaza de Mayo square just in front of the Casa Rosada, the presidential palace.
The farmers were protesting the low profits made by agricultural producers, considering the high prices on these products in stores in the Argentine capital. They are calling on the government to implement a policy of low interest loans that might enable them to buy land that they are currently renting at "above market" prices.
A decision by the government of President Mauricio Macri to open the market to imports is also putting the squeeze on the sector.
Hundreds who lined the Plaza de Mayo square to receive vegetables, many carrying plastic bags and carts, complained that their income is not enough to cover the sharp rise in food prices.
