Jorquera is a Spanish municipality located in the southeast of the Iberian Peninsula, in the province of Albacete, within the autonomous community of Castilla-La Mancha. It is located 47 km from the provincial capital. In 2020 it had 342 inhabitants, according to official data from the INE. It includes the hamlets of Alcozarejos, Calzada de Vergara, Cubas and Maldonado. It is part, along with other municipalities, of La Manchuela.
Geography.
Situated in the northeast of the province on a hill bordered on one side by the river Jucar, which crosses the municipality from west to east with its winding course forming a canyon with cliffs 200 metres high, and on the other side the Canada de Abengibre, the two joining at the Puente Nuevo, they make up a picturesque landscape today, and eminently defensive in the past, as demonstrated by the history and the remains of the castle, with its Almohad walls from the 12th century, which surround the upper part of the hill where the town is located, and the remains of the defensive towers located at the two natural entrances, the Puerta de la Villa and the Puerta Nueva with the Torre de Dona Blanca, restored and dedicated to cultural exhibitions.
Climatology.
The climate is continental, with very cold winters, with frequent frosts and temperatures that can reach -15C and dry and hot summers with temperatures above 30C.
History.
This town reached great splendor during the Muslim period. An example of this is the 12th century Almohad walled enclosure. It is said that El Cid Campeador stayed in the town's castle when he was heading to Valencia.
The area was reconquered in 1211 by Alfonso VIII, and fell back into Almohad hands that same year. However, the following year, Alfonso VIII himself, together with the militias of the councils of Madrid, Guadalajara, Cuenca, Huete and Ucles, as well as several wealthy knights, managed to definitively take Jorquera and all the surrounding towns, which were assigned to the jurisdiction of the city of Cuenca and therefore governed by the Fuero of Cuenca.
On 30 May 1266, by privilege granted by Alfonso X the Wise, Jorquera was segregated from the jurisdiction of Cuenca and became its own council, called the Community of Villa y Tierra de Jorquera, with almost all of Manchuela in Albacete being attached to said council, with the exception of the towns of Madrigueras, Tarazona de la Mancha and Villalgordo del Jucar, which belonged to the Community of Villa y Tierra de Alarcon. The legislation in force in the Community of Jorquera will continue to be that of the Cuenca charter, and in fact it will be settlers from the neighbouring province of Cuenca who settle in the area.
Until 1833, the municipality of Jorquera belonged to Castilla la Nueva, specifically to the province of Cuenca, after which this entire area was included in the newly created province of Albacete and therefore in the historical region of Murcia, until in 1982 Albacete, together with the provinces of Cuenca, Ciudad Real, Guadalajara and Toledo, became part of the autonomous community of Castilla-La Mancha.
Economy.
In this municipality the main agriculture is dry land, cereals ( wheat and barley ) and vineyards, as well as olive and almond trees.
The cultivation of the precious saffron is maintained by some families.
Along the banks of the Jucar River there are numerous irrigated vegetable gardens to supply their owners.
