(29 Oct 2017) The second round of local elections for mayors took place in Macedonia on Sunday.
Elections were being held in nearly a half of the country's municipalities, after leftist government candidates won a landslide victory in the first round two weeks ago.
According to official results, the left-wing coalition of Prime Minister Zoran Zaev won 38 mayoral posts in the first round, ending the domination of the conservative VMRO DPMNE (The Internal Macedonian Revolutionary Organization – Democratic Party for Macedonian National Unity), which has run the country for the last decade.
The Conservative VMRO DPMNE, which is the party of the former Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski, has objected to the election, claiming fraud and intimidation in the first round.
However, international monitors said the first round was run according to democratic principles.
In the second round of the elections, the main rivals for the remaining 35 municipalities from a total of 81, including the capital Skopje, are the candidates of the leftist coalition and their conservative rivals, as well as the candidates within the ethnic Albanian block.
