Ballet music coming from the Imperial Court in Vienna during the baroque period would have mostly been at the hand of Nicola Matteis the Younger. Having spent most of his life at the Imperial Court as leader of the court orchestra, Matteis was also the composer of court ballets and those within operas.
La Serenissima's new album An Englishman Abroad is a compilation taken from the life and works of little known composer Nicola Matteis the Younger. It would not be complete without some of his finest ballet music.
Ouverture & Ballo to La Verità nell Inganno comprises of four dances. Beginning with an Ouverture and finishing with a dance in the manner of a chaconne, the first of the dances within it is called 'Aria per li Masacari' or Dance of the Masked People.
As is common with the ballet music of Nicola Matteis the Younger it is written as a skeleton score, with a treble and a bass part. This was likely so that others could fill in the remainder to their own liking. For La Serenissima's album Adrian Chandler has worked his magic once again, adding a viola part, keeping the violins in unison and by choosing a rarer instrument for the basso continuo, a colascione.
