Networking and Knowledge acquisition are among the primary reasons people take on Chapter membership. While many of our Chapter leaders focus heavily on the knowledge aspect of meeting, sourcing the best presenters, determining the most relevant themes, developing event formats that best disseminate best practice, we sometimes fail to acknowledge that networking does not come naturally to many of us. This point came up dramatically at a recent market research involving focus groups, when an extremely confident looking lady, made an astonishing plea for help to network effectively.
Explaining this problem to Anna Urbaniak one of our young Chapter leaders brought up a very alarming suggestion. “Speed dating,” said Anna, “helps people network effectively within constraints of time. Why don’t we employ the same techniques to help our diffident members find networking fulfillment at our meetings?”
