The experience of visiting one of the world’s biggest lava tubes.
Cueva del Viento-Sobrado is in the town of Icod de los Vinos, in the north-east of Tenerife. It is the largest lava tube in Europe, and thought to be the fifth largest in the world after four in Hawaii. Its many underground passages span more than 17 kilometres.
Cueva del Viento was shaped by lava flows from Pico Viejo, a volcanic cone alongside Mount Teide. A lava tube is a cavity that forms inside lava flows. As the lava flows and comes into contact with air, the surface of the flow cools and creates a layer of insulation, while the lava continues to flow inside until the flow stops and a volcanic tube is left.
