The city council of Amsterdam wants the city to be natural gas free by 2040.
Factorygas has been produced from coal in Amsterdam since 1835.
In 1883 the Imperial Continental Gas Association (ICGA) gets the exclusive right to build 2 gas factories: the Wester- and the Oostergasfabriek.
Both designed by the architect Isaac Gosschalk (1838-1907).
Due to the high gas prices, the Amsterdam municipality takes over
both factories in 1898. In 1909 and 1913, the Zuider- and Noorder gas factories are built. The water tower of the Zuidergasfabriek, 41 meters high, was built in 1911. The water tower had three different water reservoirs that were used for gas production. The Zuidergasfabriek was demolished in 1964. Only the tower, regulator building, meter building, management villa and the porter's house have been preserved. The residential area of the new ‘Amstelkwartier’ is now being built around the remains of the old factory.
