Situated on the banks of the Pekerisan River in Tegallinggah Village, this ancient site that supposedly dates back to the 12th century, consists of several temples that are literally carved into the cliff faces of both sides of the river. Surrounded by panoramic rice paddies, the entrance to this complex brings you down a steep flight of stairs down to temple grounds made up of three forms of temple sculptures and nine niches (used for meditation), each of the two on the east side and seven on the west side. At the top of the cliff are three phallic sculptures that represent the holy Hindu trinity of Brahma, Wisnu & Siwa while the water element represented by the river locale embodies the fundamental Balinese concept of Tri Hita Karana (three causes of well-being) that is essential for a balance life.
