Pro #1: Construction Is Exciting
Construction is not like your typical 9-5 job that you do the same monotonous thing every single day. As a construction project engineer, you will always be on the go, learning, solving problems, and just consistently active throughout the day. In construction you are always progressing and trying to hit an aggressive schedule and budget. And through this you can also be very creative in the construction industry. Especially as an engineer, you want to be creative, and there is no one right way to build a construction project. You have complete control over how to make money, be more efficient, and execute the project. Also, no project is forever, you will constantly have fresh starts, new challenges and new opportunities.
Pro #2: You Can Make An Impact As An Entry Level Engineer
Being a construction engineer is not like most entry level jobs. Your impact as an engineer is felt from Day 1. Everything you do has a direct impact on the job, and there's not a lot of activities that don't bring value to the project. To me this is so important especially for those who really want to make a difference and are go-getters because it doesn't matter where you are on the totem pole, you are valuable in construction.
Pro #3: You Gain Real Life, Applicable Knowledge
This is especially true if you work in the building industry. You can learn how to do things around your house! You can learn means and methods, cost analysis and can ask any contractor that you hire intelligent and thought provoking questions and call them out if they're slacking off. Everyone at some point needs to have something done around the house so it's nice when you career can supplement that knowledge.
Pro #4: There's Some Good Money In Construction
Having a career in construction pays a pretty good salary especially considering you can become a construction engineer with just a bachelors. Probably on the low end, construction engineer salaries start at ~$50k and in Hawaii I've seen them as high as $90K and that was 5 years ago. It depends on the company and the type of construction that you do; what I find is that the highest paying companies don't have the best culture, so you kind of have to find the balance and culture fit for you. And to move up in the industry, its all effort; you can learn everything you need to learn to be successful in construction on the job.
Pro #5: The People You Will Meet
The construction industry is far reaching. I've met people in the industry that I would have never thought I would get to interact with. Within the project circle, you have construction workers, subcontractors, designers, engineers, developers and suppliers. But you may also deal with bankers, real estate developers, and even politicians. When you get on high profile projects you can meet some pretty important people. And because the industry is so well connected, even if you leave the industry, you could have opened a career opportunity for yourself that you didn't even know existed.
Pro #6: You Get To Build Something That Will Last
There truly is no better feeling than seeing a project completed that you put so much effort into. Every construction project has a story, and the result is so tangible and will be a reminder of your work for years to come.
