Fierce overnight fighting in the Kosovo town of Morina, close to the Albanian border, spilled over into Thursday (18/06) morning as the Kosovo crisis continued to escalate. Shelling could still be seen from the Albanian border as a group of KLA soldiers carrying a wounded colleague retreated across into the relative safety of Albania. Later on Thursday hundreds of Albanians attended the funeral in Tropoje of a man shot on Tuesday night. The man is believed to have been killed by a Serb sniper who is said to have been some 40 metres inside Albanian territory. Tropoje, a KLA (Kosovo Liberation Army) stronghold, is the first Albanian village over the border with Yugoslavia. But in the Yugoslav capital, Belgrade some 150 Serbian mothers staged a demonstration outside the Yugoslav army headquarters in demanding the return of their sons from the Kosovo frontline. The mothers were bused into Belgrade from all over the country to stage their protest. Waving placards and banners they called for the return of their children - all conscripts doing their obligatory one year military service.
