STORYLINE:
Turkey’s president says he hopes a grain deal which Turkey helped broker with the U.N. last year will be extended.
Speaking at a joint news conference Friday in Istanbul with Ukraine’s president, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Erdogan said the deal was a “windpipe opening to the world through the Turkish straits.”
The deal, which helped temper rising global food prices, is set to expire on July 17. Russia has been reluctant to extend the deal, citing obstacles to its export of food and fertilizers.
Zelenskyy arrived in Turkey as part of a European tour to rally support for Ukraine's entry into NATO after the war with Russia comes to an end, ahead of the alliance's leaders' summit in Vilnius, Lithuania on July 11-12.
Erdogan also said Ukraine “deserves” to be a member of NATO.
NATO member Turkey has maintained close ties with both Ukraine and Russia, using its relations with both countries to act as a mediator.
The visit comes as Turkey is holding off giving its final approval to Sweden's membership NATO, accusing Stockholm of failing to effectively crackdown on Kurdish militants that Ankara views as threats to its security.
Sweden, along with Finland, abandoned its decades-long neutrality and applied to join NATO following Russia's invasion of Ukraine last year. Turkey's parliament ratified Finland's membership earlier this year, after Ankara voiced satisfaction with its efforts to address Turkey's security concerns.
