How did Sheev Palpatine maintain a stranglehold on the flow of information in the galaxy? The Holonet connected the Galactic Republic with faster-than-light communication, but routing that information became more difficult the farther a planet was from the Galactic Core. The cost of deploying and maintaining Holonet relays in the Outer Rim Territories was prohibitive, so subspace relay stations provided delayed communication by days or even weeks.

Just before the outbreak of the Clone Wars, the Republic developed plans to expand the Holonet into the Outer Rim, but budget restructuring delayed the project. During the Clone Wars, Chancellor Palpatine used this to his advantage by controlling the information transmitted to and from the Outer Rim. The Confederacy of Independent Systems created the Shadowfeed, which was a network of hyperwave transceivers similar to the Republic’s Holonet News, and Palpatine, of course, controlled the propaganda transmitted here, as well. And in the early days of the Empire, Emperor Palpatine had large portions of the Holonet shut down to prevent news from spreading quickly.
