This video gives a brief oversight of the developments of Trade Unions in the UK.
Most historians seem to agree that the industrial revolution started in England in the mid-1700s. The working conditions for labour in that period was extremely bad, usually with long hours, hard work, dangerous conditions, no holidays, and the ever-present threat of dismissal.
With the passage of time, workers became united behind the newly formed trade union movement, whose purpose it was to improve the working lot for the Labour movement.
Throughout the 1800s, and into the 1900s, there were considerable instances of open conflict between workers and factory owners. Ultimately the government intervened and instituted laws to address some of the concerns that are mentioned above, whilst at the same time encouraging industrial activity.
This is the subject matter of this video. Needless to say, this is an extremely big topic, and one video will not do it justice. We would ask that you research the topic more fully, either in libraries or online, and attempt to get a greater understanding of this important issue.
